Dobbs, Mattiwilda (1925– )

American soprano. She studied with Lotte Lehmann and Pierre Bernac. Her concert career began in 1947, and she made her stage debut in 1952, with the Netherlands Opera. She appeared at Glyndebourne 1953–61 as Zerbinetta, Constanze, and the Queen of the Night, and at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London, in 1954 as the Queen of Shemakha. Her New York Metropolitan Opera House debut was in 1956, as Gilda. She sang at Stockholm 1957–73. She had a secure coloratura technique.
