Dobell, William (1899-1970)

Australian portraitist and genre painter, born in New South Wales. He studied art in the UK and the Netherlands 1929-39. His portrait of Joshua Smith (1943; Sir Edward Hayward, Adelaide, Australia) provoked a court case (Dobell was accused of caricaturing his subject). He was knighted in 1966.
