Dobson, William (1610-1646)

English portrait painter. He was court painter to Charles I and during the Civil War painted striking portraits of the Prince of Wales, Prince Rupert, and Royalist supporters at their headquarters in Oxford (1642-46). His Endymion Porter (about 1643-45; National Gallery, London) is a highly original work.
