Frankenstein

Gothic horror story by Mary Shelley, published in England in 1818. It is considered to be the origin of modern science fiction, and there have been many film versions. Frankenstein, a scientist, discovers how to bring inanimate matter to life, and creates a man-monster. When Frankenstein fails to provide a mate to satisfy the creature's human emotions, it seeks revenge by killing Frankenstein's brother and bride. Frankenstein dies in an attempt to destroy his creation.

Frankenstein

Horror film made in the USA in 1931, directed by James Whale, loosely based on the novel by Mary Shelley. Boris Karloff gives an outstanding performance as Frankenstein's monster, who develops from childlike innocence to savage killer, the role society had already assigned him.

Karloff's make-up and his achievement in creating pathos as well as terror established a benchmark in horror films.

A sequel, The Bride of Frankenstein (1935), explored undertones of macabre comedy.
