Doddridge, Philip (1702-1751)

English religious dissenter, educator, and writer. Doddridge opened an academy for educating Nonconformist ministers at Northampton in 1729, and pioneered missionary work by Nonconformists.

Doddridge's chief works are The Family Expositor, 1739-56, Of the Evidences of Christianity, 1743, and Rise and Progress of Religion in the Soul, 1745. He also wrote a number of hymns.
