malapropismAmusing slip of the tongue, arising from the confusion of similar-sounding words; for example, ‘the pineapple [pinnacle] of politeness’. The term derives from the French mal à propos (inappropriate); historically, it is associated with Mrs Malaprop, a character in Richard Sheridan's play The Rivals (1775).
