Doggett, Thomas

    0.04 sec.

Doggett, Thomas (c. 1670–1721)

Irish actor. He was associated with Colley Cibber and others in the management of the Drury Lane and Haymarket theatres. He founded the rowing prize Doggett's Coat and Badge in 1715, in honour of George I's accession the year before.

Boat race

The prize, consisting of a red coat with a large silver badge on the arm, was competed for by Thames watermen who had completed their apprenticeship within the previous 12 months. The race took place on 1 August, and the course was from London Bridge to Chelsea. Under modified conditions, the race is still held annually.
