Dolby system

Electronic circuit that reduces the background high-frequency noise, or hiss, during replay of analogue magnetic tape recordings. The higher frequency signals are boosted, and then reduced in a filtered form, helping to eliminate ‘hissing’. The system was developed by US physicist Raymond Dolby (1933– ) in 1965. It has become less important with the advent of digital audio systems such as compact discs, MP3, and digital audio tape.
