Dolores

Town in the state of Guanajuato in central Mexico, 50 km /31 mi northeast of the state capital Guanajuato; population (1995) 119,000. It is situated on the central Mexican plateau at an altitude of 1,870 m/6,135 ft. Grapevines are grown and there is some local silkworm farming and cattle rearing. The town is also a centre for pottery making.

It was here that Miguel Hidalgo proclaimed the call to arms (Grito de Dolores) which started the liberation of Mexico on 16 September 1810. The day is still celebrated as Independence Day.
