domain name server

On the Internet, a type of server that resolves an alphanumeric domain name to its numerical IP address (Internet Protocol address) and vice versa.

Humans remember names, and so domain names are usually alphanumeric as they are easier to remember, especially from a business perspective. Computers, however, work with numbers, and the Internet is based on the underlying IP addresses. Domain name servers translate between the two.
