Donaldsonville

Town and administrative headquarters of Ascension Parish, southeast Louisiana; population (1990) 7,900. It is situated on the west bank of the Mississippi River, at the head of Bayou Lafourche, and 35 km/22 mi south-southeast of Baton Rouge. Founded in 1806 as a trading post, it served briefly as the state capital in 1830–31. It is now a trade centre in an industrialized and agricultural region, producing oil, gas, sugar cane, and rice.
