Donington, Robert (1907–1990)

English instrumentalist and musicologist. He edited music, wrote learned articles, performed with various teams on early instruments, and produced books on instruments and ornaments, including The Interpretation of Early Music (1963).

He was educated at St Paul's School, London, and Oxford University, and studied early instruments and interpretation of music with Arnold Dolmetsch at Haslemere. He also published Wagner's Ring and its Symbols (1963) and The Rise of Opera (1981).
