Duncan

Town and administrative headquarters of Stephens County, south-central Oklahoma; population (1990) 21,700. It is situated 40 km/25 mi east-southeast of Lawton. The town is a trade hub for cotton, grain, and livestock producers. A supply point for oil and gas fields discovered nearby in 1921, it produces oilfield machinery and asphalt and is a refining centre. On the Chisholm Trail in Indian Territory, it was a stop for late-19th-century cattle drives.
