Donora

Town in Washington County, southwest Pennsylvania; population (1990) 5,900. It is situated on the Monongahela River, 32 km/20 mi south-southwest of Pittsburgh. Founded in 1900, Donora produces wire, steel, and appliances; there is also some agriculture. It is the birthplace of baseball great Stan Musial. On 30–31 October 1948, Donora was covered by a poisonous smog that killed 20 people and made an additional 5,000 ill.
