Doohan, Michael (1965– )

Australian motorcyclist who won the 500cc world championship five times in succession 1994–98. In 1997 he set a world record of 12 wins in a season. In May 1999, he sustained serious injuries in a crash at the Spanish Grand Prix, and was forced to announce his retirement from motorcycling the following December. At the end of his motorcycle career he had won 54 500cc Grands Prix, which only Giacomo Agostini, with 68 wins, has bettered.

Doohan won all his Grand Prix titles with Honda, whom he joined in 1989. He also finished second in the 1992 and 1993 world championships.
