Door Peninsula

Peninsula in northeastern Wisconsin that separates Green Bay from Lake Michigan. It stretches into Lake Michigan for a distance of 129 km/80 mi and is 48 km/30 mi wide at its base. At Sturgeon Bay, a 14 km/9 mi-long canal bisects the peninsula, connecting the two bodies of water.

The Door Peninsula lies within Door, Brown, and Kewanee counties. After the French had explored the area in the 17th century, it was settled by Moravian and Scandinavian immigrants in the 19th century. By the early 20th century it had developed into a popular resort location. It has many towns and small cities, and is the site of Potowatomi State Park and Whitefish Dunes State Park. Tourism and the cultivation of cherries are the main sources of income here. The Kewaunee nuclear power plant was built in 1974 in the far south of the peninsula, 13 km/8 mi south of Kewaunee on Lake Michigan.
