doppelgänger(German ‘double-goer’) apparition of a living person, a person's double, or a guardian spirit. The German composer and writer E T A Hoffman wrote a short story called ‘Die Doppelgänger’ in 1821. English novelist Charles Williams (1886–1945) used the idea to great effect in his novel Descent into Hell (1937). How to thank TFD for its existence?
