Doria, Andrea (1466-1560)

Genoese soldier. He served the French king Francis I 1519-25, and 1527, but later transferred his services to the Holy Roman emperor Charles V 1527-55, who made him prince of Melfi. In 1528 he expelled the French from the garrison of Genoa and ruled the city on republican lines. He was very active against the Turkish pirates in the Mediterranean.

He became high admiral of the Levant under Francis I, but resigned his command of the French fleet when Francis imposed his rule on Genoa.
