Dorr, John Van Nostrand

Dorr, John Van Nostrand (1872–1962)

US chemical engineer and metallurgist. He developed the Dorr classifier, a method in ore extraction for the separation and chemical treatment of fine solids suspended in liquid. His technology was used in sewage treatment, water purification, desilting projects, and sugar production.

He was born in Newark, New Jersey. It was while managing a cyanide mill in South Dakota in the early 1900s that he developed the Dorr classifier. He also founded the Dorr Company in New York City (1916) and the Dorr Foundation (1950).
