DorseyUS bandleaders, musicians, and composers during the swing era. They worked together in the Dorsey Brothers Orchestra 1934-35 and 1953-56, but led separate bands in the intervening period. The Jimmy Dorsey band was primarily a dance band; the Tommy Dorsey band was more jazz-oriented and featured the singer Frank Sinatra 1940-42. Both Dorsey bands featured in a number of films in the 1940s, and the brothers appeared together in The Fabulous Dorseys (1947). Both brothers were also known for their mastery of their instruments: Jimmy for clarinet and alto saxophone and Tommy for trombone. |
