Dorson, Richard Mercer (1916–1981)

US folklorist and historian. He founded the Folklore Institute at the Indiana University. He was instrumental in establishing folklore as a scholarly discipline by advancing fieldwork techniques, helping to establish academic programmes, and developing scholarly approaches to American folklore.

Born in New York City, he was a Harvard-educated academic. His many works include the pioneering textbook, American Folklore (1959).
