Dortmund-Ems Canal

Canal in Germany connecting the country's principal industrial region - the Ruhr - with the North Sea port of Emden. The canal is 271 km/168 mi long, and the principal town on its route is Münster.

The nucleus of the present canal was formed by the canalization of 69 km/43 mi of the River Ems between 1892 and 1899. Over 174 km/110 mi of the canal had to be excavated.
