Dost Muhammad (1793-1863)

Ruler of Afghanistan from 1818-39 and again from 1843-63. Dost Muhammad opposed British intervention in Afghanistan, but was defeated and ousted in 1839. He was restored to power in 1843 and became an ally of the British by a treaty of 1855. He later conducted successful campaigns against the Persians.
