Dost Muhammad

Dost Muhammad (1793–1863)

Ruler of Afghanistan from 1818–39 and again from 1843–63. Dost Muhammad opposed British intervention in Afghanistan, but was defeated and ousted in 1839. He was restored to power in 1843 and became an ally of the British by a treaty of 1855. He later conducted successful campaigns against the Persians.
