Dothan

City and administrative headquarters of Houston County, southeast Alabama, 155 km/96 mi southeast of Montgomery; population (2000) 57,700. It is an agricultural and livestock marketing centre; industries include food packing and processing, and the manufacture of hosiery, clothing, furniture, fertilizer, cigars, and toys.

Dothan was first settled in 1858 and incorporated in in 1885. The National Peanut Festival is held here every October. Dothan is home to a branch of Troy State University and to a community college. The Joseph M. Farley nuclear power plant (1977) is 26 km/16 mi to the east-northeast, near the Chattahoochee River.
