Douaumont

In World War I, French fort near the village of the same name in the département of the Meuse. The fort was the scene of heavy fighting during the attack on Verdun and was eventually captured by the Germans February 1916. The village itself was taken by the Germans March 1916 and subsequently changed hands several times before both were finally retaken by the French October 1916.
