Douglas, Paul Howard

Douglas, Paul Howard (1892-1976)

US senator and economist. He taught economics at the University of Chicago before his election to the Senate as a Democrat for Illinois. He shaped much of the 1960s Civil Rights legislation and was concerned with urban and housing issues.

He was born in Salem, Massachusetts. Known as a liberal, he returned to an academic career after leaving the Senate.
