Young, Douglas (1947– )

English composer and pianist. He studied at the Royal College of Music, London with Anthony Milner. Several of his compositions are open-ended ‘works in progress’ influenced by Boulez.

Orchestral

sinfonietta (1970), Aubade for orchestra (1973), piano concertino (1974), Rain, Steam and Speed for orchestra (1981), Lament on the Destruction of Forests for orchestra (1986).

Vocal

The Listeners, cantata-ballet for speaker, voices and orchestra (1967), Sir Patrick Spens, ballad for voices and orchestra (1970); Not Waving but Drowning, song cycle to poems by Stevie Smith (1970); Realities (Yeats) for soprano, tenor, and ensemble (1974); Chamber Music (James Joyce) for soprano and guitar (1976–82); The Hunting of the Snark for chorus, piano and orchestra (1982).

Chamber

sonata for string trio (1968), Essay for string quartet (1971),; chamber music includes String Trio (1985).
