Douglass, James Nicholas (1826-1898)

English engineer. His most famous project was the lighthouse on Eddystone Rocks (1882). Three previous lighthouses on this exposed site had been washed away; Douglass's stands to this day.

Born in London, Douglass served an engineering apprenticeship before being appointed chief engineer to Trinity House in 1862, which administers all lighthouses around the British Isles.
