Doulton, Henry (1820–1897)

A jar with cover ‘flambé glazed in Sung style’, made at the Doulton factory during the 1930s and marked ‘Royal Doulton’. Doulton & Co was established at Burslem, Staffordshire, England, in 1882. The name ‘Royal Doulton’ was incorporated in a number of marks from 1902.

English ceramicist. He developed special wares for the chemical, electrical, and building industries, and established the world's first stoneware-drainpipe factory in 1846. From 1870 he created art pottery and domestic tablewares in Lambeth, South London, and Burslem, near Stoke-on-Trent. He was knighted in 1887.
