Dow Chemical

US multinational chemical manufacturing company. One of the largest in the world, it was founded in 1897 and is headquartered at Midland, Michigan. The company also manufactures plastics and agricultural products.

US chemist Herbert Henry Dow formed the company to extract bromine and chlorine from brine deposits in Michigan to make chlorine bleach. The company soon diversified into other chemicals, including the mustard gas used in World War I. By the end of his life Herbert Dow had developed and patented over 100 chemical processes.
