Dow Jones average

New York Stock Exchange index, the most widely used indicator of US stock market prices. The average (no longer simply an average but today calculated to take into account changes in the constituent companies) is based on prices of 30 major companies, such as IBM and Walt Disney. It was first compiled in 1884 by Charles Henry Dow, cofounder of Dow Jones & Co., publishers of the Wall Street Journal.
