Dowagiac

Town in Cass County, southwest Michigan; population (1990) 6,400. It is situated on Dowagiac Creek, 32 km/20 mi north-northeast of South Bend, Indiana. A summer and winter resort, it also manufactures air-conditioning equipment, furnaces, sporting goods, and auto parts. Celery, wheat, and corn are grown in the area, and flour is milled here. Dowagiac is home to Southwestern Michigan College (1964).
