Dowie, John Alexander (1847-1907)

Scottish religious leader, founder of the ‘Christian Catholic Church in Zion’ sect in the USA (1896).

Dowie was born and studied in Edinburgh. After university, he went to South Australia to become the minister of a Congregational church. He established himself as a charismatic preacher and faith healer in the USA from 1888 onwards, and organized a religious community at Zion City on the shore of Lake Michigan in 1901. Dowie claimed to be the prophet Elijah. His attempt to win converts in England in 1903 and 1904 met with little success, and his influence declined after a revolt by his followers at Zion City in 1906.
