Down by the Greenwood Side

Dramatic pastoral in one act by Harrison Birtwistle (libretto by M Nyman), for soprano, five actors, and chamber ensemble. It was first performed at the Pier Pavilion, Brighton, England, on 8 May 1969. It tells how St George is defeated by the Black Knight but revives under the vernal earth magic of the Green Man.
