Downton

Town in Wiltshire, England, on the River Avon, 10 km/6 mi southeast of Salisbury; population (2001) 2,900. Downton is of ancient origin, and was an important Anglo-Saxon settlement. The ‘Moot’ and earthworks of that period still remain. Cerdic the Saxon gained a victory here in 519.
