Dracut

Town in Middlesex County, northeast Massachusetts; population (1998 est) 28,100. It is situated on the Merrimack River and the New Hampshire state line, north of and adjoining Lowell. Commercial and suburban, it manufactures textiles, chemical products, and missile systems.

Dracut was once part of Wamiset Praying Town, one of the settlements set up for ‘praying (Christianized) Indians’. Its historic landmarks include the Stephen Russel House (1680), the Cutter Homestead (1720), and the Old Yellow Meeting House (1794). Early industries were lumber and paper.
