Drake, Edwin Laurentine

Also found in: Encyclopedia 0.06 sec.

Drake, Edwin Laurentine (1819-1880)

US oilman. He bought some stock in George Bissell's Pennsylvania Rock Oil Company and together they decided to drill for oil in Titusville. His company struck oil at 69 feet on August 27, 1859 - effectively the first true oil well.

He was born in Greenville, New York. It was after having observed the drilling of artesian wells in New York and Pennsylvania that he and Bissell decided to borrow from that technology to drill for oil. The Seneca Oil Company was formed with ‘Colonel’ Drake as president. On striking oil, he neglected to patent his drilling invention, a pipe liner for the drill hole, and proved to be a poor businessman, losing all his savings to oil speculation in New York City.
