opera seria

Type of opera distinct from opera buffa, or humorous opera. Common in the 17th and 18th centuries, it tended to treat classical subjects in a formal style, with most of the singing being by solo voices. Examples include many of Handel's operas based on mythological subjects.

The classic Italian definition of opera is dramma per musica.
