Dressler, Marie (1869–1934)

Canadian-born stage and film actor. A versatile comedy actor, she performed in vaudeville, plays, and musical productions before moving into films. She won a Best Actress Academy Award for Min and Bill (1931).

She was born in Coburg and began her career at age 14 with a touring theatrical company. She appeared with Charlie Chaplin in the Mack Sennett comedy, Tillie's Punctured Romance (1914), and with Greta Garbo in Anna Christie (1930). Despite being rather large and unattractive, she became one of the most popular film stars of her day.
