Drew, Daniel

Also found in: Encyclopedia 0.01 sec.

Drew, Daniel (1797–1879)

US capitalist. Several successful business ventures made him a millionaire, but he earned a reputation for being unscrupulous in his dealings with Cornelius Vanderbilt over control of the Erie Railroad and other stock and bank deals which brought ruin to thousands.

He was born in Carmel, New York. He moved rapidly from a successful cattle-driving business, to competing against Cornelius Vanderbilt in the steamboat business, to opening the brokerage firm of Drew, Robinson & Company on Wall Street. His unscrupulous conduct led his former associates to deal against him and he became bankrupt.
