Dreyer, Carl Theodor (1889-1968)

Danish film director. Considered one of the leading figures in Danish cinema, he made a wide range of films including the austere silent classic La Passion de Jeanne d'Arc/The Passion of Joan of Arc (1928) and the internationally-acclaimed Vredens Dag/Day of Wrath (1943). His style is restrained and mystical, placing much emphasis on facial detail, subtle camera movement, and elements of decor.

Other works include the expressionist horror film Vampyr/Vampire (1932), Ordet/The Word (1955), and Gertrud (1964).
