Drina, Battle of the

In World War I, inconclusive battle between Austrian and Serbian forces on the line of the River Drina, running along the border between the two countries, September 1914.

The Austrians crossed the River Drina to invade Serbia 8 September 1914. In the north the Serbs were gathered in strength and repulsed the attack, but in the south the Austrians had more success and made a considerable advance. The Serbs counterattacked 14 September and after hard fighting drove the Austrians back to the River Drina. Both sides were exhausted and the battle died out.
