Druckman, Jacob

Druckman, Jacob (1928-1996)

US composer. His earlier works were mainly chamber pieces; he later turned to writing orchestral music, including Windows (1972), for which he won a Pulitzer Prize.

He studied at the Juilliard School, New York, and in Paris, France. He directed electronic music centres at Princeton and Yale universities, USA.

Orchestral

violin concerto (1956), Windows (1972), Chiaroscuro for orchestra (1976), viola concerto (1978), Aureole for orchestra (1979), Prism, three pieces for orchestra after music from operas by Marc-Antoine Charpentier, Cavalli, and Cherubini (1980), Athenor for orchestra (1985).

Voices and instruments

Dark upon the Harp for mezzo, brass quintet, and percussion (1962), The Sound of Time for soprano and orchestra (1965), Animus I-IV for mezzo, instruments, and tape (1966-77), Lamia for soprano and orchestra (1974).

Chamber

three string quartets (1948, 1961, 1981).
