drug and alcohol dependence

Physical or psychological craving for addictive drugs such as alcohol, nicotine, narcotics, tranquillizers, or stimulants (for example, amphetamines). Such substances can alter mood or behaviour. When dependence is established, sudden withdrawal from the drug can cause unpleasant physical and/or psychological reactions, which may be dangerous. See also addiction and alcoholism.
