Drum, Fort

    0.07 sec.

Drum, Fort

US coastal defence fort built during World War II on a small island at the mouth of Manila Bay, Philippines. It was the last US element to surrender when Corregidor fell May 1942.

The principal defences were on Corregidor, but the mouth of the bay was so wide that an enemy force might have slipped through unseen at night, so Fort Drum was built across the bay. It was retaken 1945 by a US boarding party who pumped gasoline through the fort's ventilation system and then fired explosive charges to ignite it. The subsequent fire burned for three days and none of the Japanese garrison survived.
