Hourglass pressure drum with great tonal flexibility found in many parts of Africa. Used for signalling and for conveying certain features of an unvocalized text, it is incorporated into a variety of West African popular music.

In Brazil, gods are named and called by drum rhythms; likewise, in Carriacou, these rhythms, perceived as lineage codes, may have initially been the drum names of principal deities and not politically formed emblems as I had imagined them to be.
