Drummond Island

Island in Chippewa County, northeast Michigan; 32 km/20 mi long and 18 km/11 mi wide. It is situated off the east tip of Michigan's Upper Peninsula, in northern Lake Huron, at the mouth of the St Marys River. The island is a hunting, boating, and fishing resort, and also has stone quarries and lumber resources. Much of it is covered by Lake Superior State Forest. Drummond, on Potagannissing Bay, is the only town, and is accessible by car ferry from the mainland; population (1990) 800.

Drummond Island is the only island in the Manitoulin chain that belongs to the USA. It became a US possession in 1828 when it was taken over from the British, who had occupied it in 1815 and built a fort.
