Doctor Who

Hero of the eponymous British science fiction television series, created in 1963 by Sidney Newman (1917–1997) and Donald Wilson (1910–2002). Doctor Who is a time traveller and explorer who fights evil. The series, which achieved cult status and became an important part of British popular culture, aired 1963–89 and was relaunched in 2005.

Doctor Who's space vehicle is the Tardis (acronym for time and relative dimensions in space) and his most famous enemies are the robotlike aliens called Daleks. The actors who have played Doctor Who in the series include William Hartnell (1908–1975), Patrick Troughton (1920–1987), Jon Pertwee (1919–96), Tom Baker (1936– ), Peter Davison (1951– ), Colin Baker (1943– ), Sylvester McCoy (1943– ), Christopher Eccleston (1964– ), and David Tennant (1971– ). A television film of the same name was released in 1996.
