On the other, the dry riverbed is a sandy desert landscape. In this, working with landscape architect Tarna Klitzner, the donga remains as a natural focus, with a pool and stream set within the dry riverbed, flowing across the site into the pond to the north that sits beneath the guesthouse. But as we headed up the long driveway, past the goat herds and the dry riverbed, past crumbling houses and donkey carts, it felt odd that I was staying at a place that cost several hundred dollars a night--a fortune to the locals. |
