Drysdale, Russell

    0.06 sec.

Drysdale, (George) Russell (1912–1981)

Australian artist. In 1944 he produced a series of wash drawings for the Sydney Morning Herald recording the effects of a severe drought in western New South Wales. The bleakness of life in the Australian outback is a recurring theme in his work, which typically depicts the dried-out, scorched landscape with gaunt figures reflecting fortitude in desolation and poverty. Children appear frequently, as in The Gatekeeper's Wife (1965; National Library, Canberra).

He is also known for his paintings of the old gold-mining towns of Hill End and Sofala in New South Wales.
